The Power of Combining EMDR with Parts Work
At The Healix Centre, we integrate EMDR therapy with a parts-based approach to support deeper, more lasting healing. This combination helps us work not only with difficult memories, but also with the different parts of ourselves that develop through our life experiences, particularly those that have been difficult or overwhelming.
A parts-based approach is based on the idea that we all have different sides or "parts" of ourselves. For example, you might notice a part that tries to keep everyone happy, a part that is highly self-critical, a part that becomes angry to protect you, or a part that carries deep hurt or sadness. These parts usually develop for good reasons and are often trying to protect us, even when they create difficulties in our lives today.
Understanding these parts can help make sense of why we think, feel, react, and relate to others in certain ways. Rather than fighting against these reactions, we learn to understand them with curiosity and compassion.
When combined with EMDR therapy, this approach helps create a greater sense of safety before processing difficult memories. It allows the parts carrying pain, fear, or protective roles to feel understood and supported, making it easier to process difficult memories without becoming overwhelmed.
The result is greater self-awareness, improved emotional regulation, less inner conflict, and a stronger, more connected sense of self. This approach aims to create meaningful, lasting change by addressing the underlying patterns that keep people feeling stuck.
Because this approach addresses the underlying processes that contribute to many mental health difficulties, it can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, low self-worth, difficulties with emotional regulation and relationships, and other long-standing patterns that no longer serve you.
